Speciaal Metaal Industrie Dokkum B.V. was founded in 1980 by mister Jelle Jelsma and mister Gabe Spijksma. Mister Spijksma is the father of the current managers Bauke and Bert Spijksma. The company started out small, with a machining and assembly department, but has evolved considerably since then.

The core activity of the SMI Groep is manufacturing mechanical parts, components and machines by welding, turning, milling and assembling. Engineering and project management are the basis for a good cooperation of all the disciplines. This is complemented by knowledge and expertise from outside the company. The combination of a good preparation, modern techniques and well able professionals are a guarantee for a high end product. The SMI Groep is continually investing in knowledge, efficiency and customer contact.

SMI Departments

Speciaal Metaal Industrie Dokkum B.V. was founded in 1980 by mister Jelle Jelsma and mister Gabe Spijksma. The company functions as the headquarters and is the starting point of many national and international projects before shipped to one of our daughter companies or customers. In 2003 Delft Instruments in Leeuwarden was acquired and a sheet metal shop was formed under the name SMI Plaatwerk. With the creation of the sheet metal shop, SMI is able to offer the complete metalworking service. While both companies have become specialist in their own area of expertise, a perfect synergy has been created. This gives customers the possibility to have one contractor without the need of subcontractors.

SMI Core Business

In 2005 it was decided to change the name from SMI Dokkum to SMI Verspaning and SMI Constructie. SMI machining focuses on small and mid-sized series of parts and subassemblies and SMI Constructie focuses on construction works and apparatus engineering of steel, stainless steel and aluminium. The different departments of SMI are placed on the market as SMI Groep since 2005. The market approach is offering the individual specialisations separately and combined. SMI is active on the Dutch market, as well as on international markets, for example in Germany and Belgium.

Sheetmetal SMI Leeuwarden

The sheet metal working division of the SMI Groep is excellently utilised for prototypes as well as small and medium sized series in steel, aluminium or stainless steel. Quality, finishing degree and customer contact are top priorities. SMI Sheet Metal Working products are used for a large variety of applications.

SMI Sheet Metal Working fabricates a wide range of sheet metal components, enclosures and printed circuit boards, but also sensitive electronics, trolleys for medical equipment and cabinets for control panels.

Yacht Equipment Cramm

Established in 1928, Hydromar has a long and proud history as a supplier of hydraulic equipment. We design and manufacture premium tailor made hydraulic systems based on standard solutions.
